My name is
Victoria Winters. The dark threads of the past are tying me to the great house
on top of Widow’s Hill. My search seems as endless as the corridors of
Collinwood. Yet I have accomplished something, I think. I’ve made friends with
one small and terribly troubled boy.
Roger wants to know why David
is sitting in the dark in the drawing room. Then he wants to know whether David
has seen his car keys.
David tells Roger he isn’t
going to let Roger send him away. (He’d have better luck with that if he tried
to be nicer to everybody.)
Vicki tells Roger she thinks
David is beginning to trust her. She tells him his keys are in the car. She
wants Roger to buy those magazines but he says he doesn't have time. After he
leaves, she tells Liz Burke was looking at Roger’s car. Neither of them tells
Roger this.
Roger tells Liz that Burke
might be sincere but he’ll keep the other possibilities in mind. Liz thinks
Burke is not sincere.
David tells Vicki his father
wants to send him away. Vicki says there’s not reason for him to be sent
away—she’s here to take care of him. David hopes his father dies. Vicki says
David thinks everyone hates him. He agrees. Everyone but Aunt Elizabeth, maybe.
And he’s not a nice boy, he says.
Vicki tells him story about a
girl in the foundling home who was lonely, but every time someone tried to be
friends with her, she chased them away. And soon nobody did like her. But the
truth was she didn’t like herself.
David doesn't see what this
has to do with him.
Vicki tells him he should give
his father a chance.
Liz is unable to convince
Roger not to go to town.
David makes a halfhearted
attempt to dissuade Roger from taking his car. Liz wants to know why David
seems so intense tonight. (Tonight?) Vicki says David is convinced his father
wants to send him away. Liz admits Roger isn’t fond of David.
Roger’s brakes fail and he’s
in an accident. Liz is very upset when she receives the call. “I knew he
shouldn’t have gone there! He could have been killed! He could have been
killed!”
