Episode 121: Grace Doesn't Work Here Anymore

Wednesday, December 14, 1966

Note: The episodes’ official numbering includes skipped numbers for pre-emptions, in accordance with their numbering system (so that one could look at the number of an episode and know what day of the week it aired on). I have elected to number the episodes by what episode it actually is, but I will note the official numbering also. This is the 121st episode, but the official number is 123.

My name is Victoria Winters. The days have been long since I came to Collinwood, but this day is the longest one of my life. The searchers continue to look for me, but I am well hidden. My eyes have been filled with fear, but now I see fear and terror on the face of the man who would kill me—for he has seen something, something that he never dreamed he would see, something that terrified him.

Matthew tells Josette’s portrait that it’s nothing but a picture someone painted. The portrait begins to glow and Matthew runs away from it.

Joe visits the restaurant after searching for Vicki.
Maggie is pretty lighthearted about Vicki’s disappearance. (What good friends you have, Vicki!)

Joe tells her he and Carolyn have split up.
He tells about the fight in Burke’s room last night.

A mysterious blonde enters.

Joe thinks she looks familiar.

David, on his way to bring Matthew food, sees him entering the old house.
Matthew tells the portrait, “Nothing. Nothing.”

He goes into the secret room.

David comes in and calls his name, looking around for him.

Matthew knocks something over and David hears.
He calls Matthew’s name a couple of more times and then goes outside. Looking in a window, he sees Matthew emerge from the bookcase-door.

Matthew looks out the window and David plasters himself against the wall.

Joe tries to remember where he’s seen the mystery lady before, but Maggie is more interested in details about last night.
Joe mentions that when he mentioned Vicki was missing, Burke forgot Carolyn existed.

Joe leaves.

The mystery lady asks if Grace is still there. No, Maggie replaced her five years ago. So the lady is from around her. She’s staying at the hotel.

She asks about the Collins family, specifically Mrs. Stoddard, Roger (according to Maggie, most likely to give the best imitation of Scrooge this Christmas).
She asks about David.

Matthew goes outside. David is by the door with his sack of food. He tells Matthew he was looking for him. He can’t figure out where Matthew disappeared to.
Matthew tells David to stop figuring and grabs his arm, twisting it. David says he hurt his arm.

David decides it might be time for him to go. They might be wondering where he went to. Finally, David convinces Matthew to trust him enough to let him go.

David sneaks back in while Matthew is getting water. He opens the secret door.

And sees . . .
