Episode 118: Cigarettes

Friday, December 9, 1966

Note: The episodes’ official numbering includes skipped numbers for pre-emptions, in accordance with their numbering system (so that one could look at the number of an episode and know what day of the week it aired on). I have elected to number the episodes by what episode it actually is, but I will note the official numbering also. This is the 118th episode, but the official number is 120.

My name is Victoria Winters. Morning has come to Collinwood, and my bed is still empty. I may never sleep in that bed again, for my searchers have not yet found me, and my captor is a desperate man. Morning has come to the ghost house, after a night of terror—and the day holds no promise of salvation.

Matthew says nobody’s around. Just lake sounds. No people who can hurt him, who can hurt Vicki.
He doesn’t want to hurt Vicki—unless she makes him.
He’d like to take her gag off to see if he can trust her. If she lets out one sound, he’ll close her mouth forever.

He takes the gag off.

She says she can help him.

Matthew says he doesn’t need any help.

He blames her for causing all this. She says she’s not responsible. Those things would have happened whether she came there or not.

He’s not going to let them punish him.

She says he can’t stay there indefinitely; what about food and water?

He says he has that all taken care of. Maybe he’ll let her have part of his breakfast if she’s good.the job.

Mrs. Johnson tells David that Vicki disappeared and they searched for her last night, even Burke Devlin.

They’re afraid Matthew might have her.

David says Matthew wouldn’t hurt a fly.

Not flies, maybe, but people, Mrs. Johnson opines.

David becomes worried. When Mrs. Johnson leaves the kitchen, he packs up some food for Matthew, just the same. And he takes Mrs. Johnson’s cigarettes too.

When she comes back, he says he might look for Vicki. She says maybe he should, since she might not be missing if she hadn’t been out looking for him.

Mrs. Johnson notices her cigarettes are missing. David says he doesn’t know where they are.

Matthew sees his breakfast coming and gags Vicki again.

Vicki hears David. He tells Matthew that Vicki’s missing.
He says they think Matthew might have her. Matthew says they try to blame him for everything.

David wishes he could find Vicki. He wishes he could prove Matthew was innocent.

David wonders whether his father could have her.

Matthew says maybe, if he did those other things. He warns David to be careful of people who kill. “It’s easier as it goes along.”

He advises David to only bring food once a day now, so as not to get caught. David tries to get Matthew to tell him the secret, but Matthew gets angry. Then he says maybe he’ll tell David in a couple of days.

Matthew takes the breakfast into the secret room. He removes Vicki’s gag.

She doesn’t think he should be using David, and she wonders what will happen if David gives him any trouble.

When Vicki says she’s thirsty, Matthew gags her again, so he can go to the old well.

David realizes he forgot to give Matthew the cigarettes.

When he comes back to the house, Vicki calls out through her gag, and he hears her.

Matthew is on his way back to the house.

Episode 18: Mr. Devlin in the Garage with a Wrench

Wednesday, July 20, 1966

My name is Victoria Winters. My past is still a mystery to me, but my future is bound to the great house on Widow’s Hill. To a boy whose eyes brim with fear and the torment. To the strange sounds and lonely echoes of a small room filled with the echoes of long-dead years.

Roger goes up the stairs. David skulks in the shadows near the stairwell.

Vicki’s window is rattling in the wind. The catches on those windows! She gets up and closes it. Just as she’s trying to settle back to sleep, Roger comes knocking. He wants her to meet him in the drawing room. After their last drawing room encounter, it’s a wonder that she agrees.

David comes to the drawing room and tells Roger he’s sorry.
“Sorry for what? That I survived?” Roger immediately apologizes.
David asks about his arm. It’s just a sprain. David says he knows Roger said someone tampered with his brakes. Roger sends David to bed, and David says he isn't sorry after all.

David knocks at Vicki’s door and wants to talk with her. Vicki tries understand his father is upset and that it’s not David’s fault there was an accident. David denies doing anything.
“David, no one’s accusing you of anything. No one but yourself.” She thinks he feels bad because he said he wished his father would die. His father didn't mean it when he shouted at David, “just like you didn't mean what you said.”
David wants to know what she’s going to tell his father.
Nothing about him.
What if it wasn't an accident?
His father will go to the police.
“What will they do?”
    “Whatever police do.”
David is upset that the person who tampered with the brakes could go to jail. It’s the same as sending someone away, the way his father threatened to send him away. That’s all Vicki and his father think about. They’re both the same.

Roger is not interested in David’s emotional state. He questions Vicki about the bleeder valve. Vicki tells him Burke had a wrench in his hand when she saw him in the garage by Roger’s car. Roger (and the whole audience) wants to know why Vicki didn't mention this before. It seemed silly after Mr. Devlin was so friendly. Roger wants to know if Burke’s hands were dirty. Vicki doesn't recall.
Roger plans to confront Burke in his hotel room—and he wants Vicki to get dressed and come with him. She can wait in the lobby and he’ll only call her up if he needs her.

While Vicki is dressing, David gets the bleeder valve to hide in her drawer. She finds him lurking and wants to know if he was bringing “another present.”
David tells her he wrecked the car.
One of his models. He crushed it and threw it out of the window. Why doesn't she call the police on him?
“Because it’s easier to buy you a new car.”
Roger interrupts them, looking for Vicki. Before she goes downstairs, David coldly tells her he hates Roger.

When Vicki joins Roger downstairs, he tells her he’s worried about his own problems, not David.
“I should think he’d be one of your problems.”
“Not tonight.” Tonight he is only concerned about what happened to the car, and it has nothing to do with David.
