My name is
Victoria Winters. Collinwood stands alone on a hill above this town founded by
the same family that built this great mansion. But undercurrents are there,
undercurrents that spin from the anger of one man.
David pays a surprise visit to
Burke.
David says Burke told him that nothing was against the law unless you get caught. Burke can’t believe he ever told David that.
David says he knows Burke didn’t kill Mr. Malloy—because David’s father did.

Roger comes home, excited
about the coroner’s verdict.
Liz is still worried. Roger says he will leave the problems of David and Burke to Liz, on this glorious day.

David tells Burke that the
voices told him Roger killed Mr. Malloy. David wishes Burke could come live at
Collinwood. Burke thinks he might someday.
There’s someone at the door.
Burke sends David into the kitchen. It’s Carolyn, come to be snotty about
Vicki, who she says is no friend of hers. (Carolyn, why must you be such a
fickle friend?)
David: “What’s she doing here?”
He’s visiting his friend.
David knows how Liz feels
about Mr. Devlin. “You know she wouldn’t want you to visit him.”
“Then what are you doing here?”
“Very good, Davey. Your turn.”
Carolyn tells Burke she came
to tell him Mrs. Johnson is coming to work at Collinwood.
Burke asks to talk with
Carolyn alone. He wants to know why it bothers her so much that she drove Vicki
home. He doesn’t have to account for himself to her or Vicki or anyone. She says
she’s glad she gave him the fountain pen back.
He says he never got it back.
She says Roger was supposed to
deliver it.
Burke says he was going to
give it back that night at his office, but he couldn’t find it.
Carolyn goes to make a phone
call and comes back to report the accidental death verdict. Burke says to get
David out of there, to take him home.
Carolyn and David arrive home.
Liz is not happy about David running off and especially going off to see Burke.
Carolyn says this is a great day for everyone.
Burke reads the sheriff the
riot act over the verdict. The sheriff says there was no influence on the
coroner’s verdict. Burke doesn’t buy it. He says this business is not buried.
He’s been wearing gloves, but he’s taking them off now.
